Start Preparing Your Lawn for Spring: Landscaping Tools”

As winter comes to a close, many individuals are counting down the days to when they can start working in their yards and gardens again. While it may not be time to head outside just yet, there are still plenty of things that can do now to begin preparing your lawn for spring. The best place to start is with your landscaping tools.

It’s likely that your landscaping tools have spent the majority of winter packed away. But, now is the perfect time to pull them out of storage to make sure they are still in working order. Here are five steps to preparing your lawn tools for spring.

Clean them

Did you forget to clean the tools before packing them away for winter? If so, cleaning them now is recommended so you can see what condition they are in under the dirt and grime. Using a bristle brush and water is the best cleaning method. If any dirt remains after a thorough scrubbing, wipe it away with a towel or cloth.

Remove rust

Tools that were not put away properly for winter or well-cared for throughout the year often develop rust. To prevent rust, clean tools after every use and remove any sticky residue from plants and trees. If rust is apparent on tools now, soak them in a 50/50 vinegar and water solution before using a wire brush to remove the rust.

Sharpen them

To cut plants and grass cleanly, blades on tools and lawnmowers need to be sharp. Sharpen them at home or take them to a home and garden store that offers professional sharpening. After they are sharp, apply a layer of grease to prevent rust.

Replace broken parts

Inspect all tools thoroughly looking for damaged parts. Any broken pieces should be replaced before using to prevent injury and assure the tools perform to the best of their abilities. In addition to the nuts and bolts you can easily see, don’t forget to check the spark plugs and O-rings on your mower. If any moving pieces are stiff or hard to move back and forth, apply grease or WD-40 to help bring them back to life.

Purchase oil/fuel and other necessary items

Finally, if any tools are in poor condition, even after a little TLC, it is best to replace them with new ones. It is also the time to purchase oil and fuel for motorized tools, including lawnmowers, trimmers, and edgers.
